Best of 2021: Top 10 Mainstream Songs

Ah, the end of the year again. A time of contemplation and moving forward towards a new start, in this case, the New Year duh 🙄. As with last year, I am announcing that this Best of Songs list will be an annual feature of this site. Now where was I, let’s just get on with the list, no need for unnecessary diversions.

Once again, not in chronological order, just what I think are worthy to be Top 10 Songs for the Year that was 2021. One artist is allowed only one song. Let’s t;s get to it:

1. Kid Laroi Featuring Justin Bieber – Stay

This chart-topping collaboration brought in a ton of buzz for Kid Laroi, staying at the top of the Billboard charts for weeks. Although the lyrics are slightly problematic, it was cruise control for the young Australian teen singer. Justin Bieber was just the icing on this “Dynamic Duo’ cake.

2. Doja Cat & SZA – Kiss Me More

Another hit collaboration. After wowing us last year with Say So, Doja Cat returns, this time with SZA for one of the best collaborations of the year, Kiss Me More is, just simply chef’s kiss.

3. The Weeknd – Save Your Tears

Continuing with his 80s sound, this track is on my personal repeat playlist. While I loved the follow-up track Take My Breath too, ultimately only one could be on the list / prevail. The remix with Ariana Grande of Save Your Tears is equally great, so whichever your preference is, have one, or take ‘em both.

4. Jamie Miller – Here’s Your Perfect

On this side of the world in Asia, this Welsh singer’s heartfelt ballad struck a chord. Garnering attention with a stint on The Voice UK, under the tutelage of coach Jennifer Hudson, this tune has blown up on TikTok. Up next: conquering Stateside.

5. Olivia Rodrigo – Good 4U

A track of her smashing debut album Sour, this year’s It Girl (I keep repeating multiple times) has a winner with this rock track. Granted, I could’ve listed many singles off that said album, Driver’s License, Deja Vu…, but this track is the superior one indeed.

6. Why Don’t We – Love Back

A highly underrated boyband in their home country (USA, seriously why you sleeping on these guys), this track just invokes a natural summer vibe. I would call it a perfect pop-dance track, and…a great pick-me-up song, all rolled into one.

7. Silk Sonic – Leave the Door Open

The teaming up of Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak resulted in the stunning debut of group Silk Sonic and they came up with this 70s tinged track. With three singles already released, this group has got the makings of S-U-P-E-R-S-T-A-R-S.

8. BTS – Butter

The South Korean superstars released two English singles in 2021, but truly this track is just the slightly better track to me. No hate to Permission to Dance, but come on now, we know that Butter just rolls more smoothly.

9. Gideon – Heartbreak Anniversary

Ah, the song that is just self-explanatory. Gideon soars on this track that is relied on his vocals that oh so screams… heartbreak. The man has a winner here with the track that’s a perfect remedy for the broken-hearted.

10. Dua Lipa – We’re Good

The British songstress keeps on churning out bangers, but among her 2021 singles, I list We’re Good as the best one. With Dua’s sultry vocals anchoring this song, it proves that Ms Lipa is at her ultimate best when it comes to smooth, sexy ditties.

Last but not least, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Best of 2020: Top 10 Mainstream Songs

Let’s get right to the bottom of it, we can all wholeheartedly agree that 2020 has been a completely rotten year, no arguments about that. The year 2020 brought to the forefront words such as coronavirus, quarantine, lockdown, pandemic, and of course, everybody’s favorite, Covid-19 into the public lexicon. The ubiquitous face mask and hand sanitizers became essential daily items. It will also be remembered as a very rotten year for many years to come. It also helped accelerate the usage of technology more than any other year into society’s lives, be it for schooling or for work.

The year 2020 will be remembered where millions of lives were infected and lost. It will also be remembered for producing a vaccine for Covid-19 in record time, in just under a year, thanks to the hard work of researchers and scientists. Also, a huge thanks to all frontliners who have battled this virus worldwide, we can never repay their sacrifice.

As the saying goes, the show must go on. However, as in previous years, the entertainment industry has provided us with enough good material to last…until the next year. I will focus on songs for my top 10 this year because (they’re at least 3 minutes long, movies were hardly aplenty). I do however want to give a big shoutout to Netflix because they are the BOMB and a godsend.

I am listing my favorite Top 10 Songs not according to chronological order, just the ones that I think are tops this year. The criteria are that the songs must have been released between 1st January till 31st December 2020. Also, an artist can only appear once with one song. So without further ado, here goes nothing.

1. Marshmello & Halsey – Be Kind

This is personally my favorite Marshmello collaboration, him and Halsey make this collaboration, complete perfection.

2. Dua Lipa and Da Baby – Levitating

Dua Lipa has plenty of bangers on her disco flavored sophomore album Future Nostalgia but for this list; I just had to pick something.

3. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande – Rain on Me

The two current Queens of Pop, collaborating on one of the finest dance pop anthems of the year, ‘nuff said.

4. BTS – Dynamite

The K-Pop super group released their very first English language single in 2020 and the result is Dynamite.

5. Doja Cat – Say So

Doja Cat’s breakthrough hit ushered in the 70s disco-pop sound in 2020.

6. Harry Styles – Watermelon Sugar

The former One Directioner had a string of songs to choose from in 2020; ultimately, this one prevailed.

7. Little Mix – Sweet Melody

While I’ve enjoyed some of their past hits, it was from their sixth album Confetti that I finally came around to this British girl group, but alas, the departure of Jesy Nelson somehow soured the experience, but hey, at least we’re left with gems.

8. Blackpink – How You Like That

The Korean girl group struck gold with the first of their three singles to promote their 2020 comeback with their first full album The Album.

9. DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch – Rockstar

Spending seven weeks on top of the Billboard chart, this song had a remix that was timely in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and an apt reminder of what was 2020.

10. Justin Bieber feat. Chance the Rapper – Holy

The now happily married JB also had a string of hits to choose from off his fifth studio album, Changes, however this song was chosen due to its inspiring message.

With that, there’s my list of the Top 10 Mainstream or Pop Songs of 2020. Happy New Year everybody and let’s all hope that it’ll be a better year in 2021.
